THE WINE

100% Gamay from Anjou Noir. The wine is made using organic practices, with hand-harvested grapes undergoing fermentation with indigenous yeasts. It is aged exclusively in stainless steel, preserving the fresh fruit character of the Gamay grape. L'Esquif has vibrant aromas of red berries, with a touch of spice, and a smooth, light body on the palate. The wine is easy-drinking, with bright acidity and soft tannins, making it a great match for a wide range of dishes, particularly lighter fare like charcuterie or roasted vegetables.

THE PEOPLE

Clos de L'Elu is a 20-hectare estate in the Layon Valley near Chaume, in the western Loire, founded in 2008 by Thomas and Charlotte Carsin. After taking over the existing domaine, they embarked on a transformative journey, revitalizing the vineyards, planting native grape varieties, and experimenting with different aging vessels to create the exceptional wines they envisioned. Initially drawn to Anjou by Chenin Blanc, they chose to move away from the region's typical sweet styles, instead focusing on crafting dry wines that express the unique terroir. Frustrated by the political constraints of the appellation, they declassified their wines to VDF (Vin de France) in 2018, which also led to a name change for all their wines, including those from the original walled 'Clos' vineyard.

THE PLACE

AOC Anjou is a wine region located in the Loire Valley, known for its diverse range of wines, both red and white. The region primarily grows Chenin Blanc, producing crisp, mineral-driven whites that can range from dry to sweet, and also some sparkling wines. Red wines in Anjou are typically made from Cabernet Franc and Gamay, offering fresh, fruit-forward styles. Anjou’s varied terroirs, from the schist soils of the slopes to the clay and limestone in the valleys, provide complexity and depth to its wines.
