THE WINE
Lise and Bertrand Jousset's 2022 Premier Rendez-vous is a Chenin Blanc from Montlouis-sur-Loire, sourced from 11 parcels with soils of clay, flint, and 30% sand. The organically (certified) and biodynamically (uncertified) farmed vines range from 80 to 120 years old. Each parcel is vinified separately, spending 10 months in used oak barrels before blending in stainless steel tanks for an additional 5 months. The wine features floral aromas with hints of orange and unripe peach, followed by flavors of melon, ripe stone fruits, and minerals. It has a medium-heavy body, bright acidity, and a long, balanced finish.
THE PEOPLE
Bertrand and Lise moved to Montlouis-sur-Loire in 2003, where they established an 8-hectare estate with vineyards ranging from 60 to 110 years old. Their vines grow in diverse parcels, primarily on clay and flint soils, with some areas rich in limestone. The estate's wines are initially vinified in barrels, with aging times varying by cuvée before being transferred to tanks and amphorae.
Dedicated to natural farming and winemaking, the Joussets, like many in the Loire Valley, have faced significant challenges. Their delicate vineyards and terroir in Montlouis have suffered from the unpredictable seasonal shifts of the past two decades, leading to multiple difficult vintages and failed harvests.
THE PLACE
Montlouis-sur-Loire is a Loire Valley appellation known for its Chenin Blanc wines. Its vineyards grow on clay, flint, and limestone soils, producing wines that range from dry to sparkling and sweet. The region’s cool climate and seasonal variations influence its wine styles, often marked by bright acidity and minerality. Many producers focus on organic and biodynamic practices to preserve the terroir. Unlike its more famous neighbor, Vouvray, Montlouis wines tend to be lighter, with a fresher, more delicate profile due to differences in soil composition and microclimate.
