THE WINE
Andi Mann's Kirschyard Chardonnay is a distinctive natural white wine from Rheinhessen, Germany. The 2021 vintage showcases a slightly opalescent golden-yellow hue, with aromas of lemon, white peach, banana, white flowers, aromatic herbs, and alpine butter. On the palate, it offers a pleasant softness and fullness, balanced by good acidity, leading to an elegant mineral finish with a subtle almond touch.
The Kirschyard Chardonnay vines, some of the oldest plantings of this variety in Germany, are planted in a single vineyard with limestone and porphyry soils. Vinification involves a gentle three days of skin maceration, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large wooden barrels, followed by one year of aging in large wooden barrels and an additional 12 months in stainless steel before bottling. The wine is unfiltered, unfined, and made without added sulfur, reflecting Andi Mann's commitment to zero-zero natural winemaking practices.
THE PEOPLE
Andi Mann is a renowned winemaker from Eckelsheim in Germany's Rheinhessen region, leading Weingut Mann, a family estate established in 1699. After studying economic sciences and oenology at Geisenheim University, Andi embraced organic and biodynamic viticulture, focusing on minimal-intervention methods. His 10-hectare vineyard thrives on diverse soils, including volcanic porphyry and limestone, cultivating varieties like Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, and Spätburgunder. Andi's wines are celebrated for their authenticity and vibrant energy, reflecting a deep respect for nature and terroir.
THE PLACE
Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, is known for its diverse soils and dynamic winemaking. In the southwestern tip, Eckelsheim sits an hour west of Frankfurt, where ancient sea beds have shaped the mineral-rich slopes. Beneath the surface, volcanic porphyry—a silicate-rich granite—adds depth and structure to the wines. This unique terroir supports a range of grape varieties, from Riesling and Silvaner to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, producing wines that balance freshness, minerality, and complexity.
